When searching for a bass fishing reel, the first thing to do is to make sure that reel feels like it isn’t the right size. If a reel feels large and bulky in your hand then it is too big. Most reels come in smaller sizes, and still have the same gear ratio. Having a reel that fits your hand size helps with casting and is much more comfortable.
The gear ratio in a bass fishing reel tells how fast the retrieve is; the higher the gear ratio, the faster the retrieve. A high gear ratio allows you to reel fish in fast without putting a lot of stress on your wrist. Gear ratios are shown by a ratio of two numbers, for example 6:1 means that the spool will spin 6 times for each full turn of the reel. An average rod has a ratio of 5:1 to 6:1. As gear ratios increase in bass fishing reels there is a small decrease in power.
The most common types of bass fishing reels are bait casting reels, spinning or fixed spool reels, and spin casting reels. Spinning reels are used for light lures that would not be easily cast by a bait casting reel. They have the problem of line twisting, so it is important to reposition the bail to keep line twisting to a minimum. Bait casting reels have been in use for hundreds of years, and require heavy lures to send out the line because they really on the momentum of the lure to drag the line out. Spin casting reels are often used by beginners, because of their ease of use and line twisting is very rare. They can use lighter lures than bait casting reels and line snaring is less likely to happen.
Left bass fishing reels mean that the crank is on the left side of the rod. These are most common on bait casting reels and have slowly been gaining popularity over the years. Like normal bait casting reels, they require heavy lures.
