In this article I am going to discuss two excellent places in Florida to fish for Largemouth Bass. One is the largest and most well known lake in the state, the other an overlooked hotspot I have fished with great success. They each require a different style of fishing. One offers the best chance for landing a very large bass, the other offers a chance to catch many bass from shore.

Lake Okeechobee in my opinion is hands down the best Largemouth Bass lake in the United States. It is a large lake, in fact of all the lakes completely within the borders of the United States only Lake Michigan is larger. It is also a very shallow lake. Most of the water you will fish is between three to six feet deep. It is a very weedy lake and in my opinion very easy to fish.

If your main objective is to catch Largemouth Bass the surefire method of success is to use live shiners. You want to use “wild shiners” caught directly from the lake, they are much more productive. Finding fish is not very difficult. Look for weedy areas and areas that offer some kind of cover. In a shallow lake like Okeechobee you can often scan an area and see where the fish are.

When using live shiners generally the larger the bait the larger the average fish you will catch. Sure you can catch a monster on a small shiner. In the long run however a fisherman using eight inch long shiners will catch bigger fish than another fisherman using five inch shiners. Keeping your bait lively is very important. An aerated livewell puts you at a big advantage in this regard. Pay careful attention to how you hook your shiner. Use a hook that is appropriate to the size of bait you are using. If hooking through the lips you need to be careful casting that you do not throw the bait off the hook. I prefer to hook shiners through the upper back. When doing this make sure not to impale the fish too deeply in the body where its organs are. An appropriate size hook through the shiner’s upper back is the way to go.

You can fish your live bait in several different ways. I prefer sometimes to suspend my bait under a bobber while allowing the boat to drift. When fishing with a bobber often the indication of a pickup is the bobber moving to the left or right. I like to set my hooks quickly when I have a pickup. These are big bass with very tough mouths. You need to have a rod with some backbone to it. I recommend a medium/heavy action rod. You also need to be firm in setting your hooks. Keep the hooks sharp and don’t be afraid to make a stiff hookset.

Fishing with artificial baits is of course a much more sporting method of fishing. Okeechobee has many weeds and is best fished with weedless or semi-weedless lures. Spinnerbaits are an awesome lure to use. I have caught many fish by finding a section of the lake with water depth of 4-6 feel with submerged weeds with 1-2 feet of the surface. I cast my spinnerbait either directly over the weeds or make my retrieve slower and allow the bait to glide through the tops of the weeds. Sometimes I will allow the lure to drop into pockets of the weeds.

You can of course fish this type of area with other baits as well. Top water baits can offer a great deal of excitement. I like to use a topwater bait when there is little or no wind. A worm rigged weedless is another good choice. Stay away from crankbaits or traditional spinners.

Equipment choice is a major factor in fishing this lake. You often are faced with many places a hooked fish can wrap the line around. I prefer a rod in these situations that is pretty stiff. You are much less concerned in these circumstances with feeling bites so a sensitive rod is not a priority. You need to be able to horse a fish around obstructions. A medium to heavy action rod with a powerful reel is the ticket in these situations.

A final suggestion for fishing Lake Okeechobee is investing in a good pair of sunglasses. You would be surprised at how many bass you can spot with them and subsequently target.

The yellow and brown bullhead, followed by the channel catfish, is the most abundant fish in the area. They are favored by sportsman for the delicious table fare that they provide. Catfish are harvested commercially, mainly on Lake Okeechobee, and their tasty fillets are served as an all you can eat favorite in most area restaurants.

While not particularly sought after, the pickerel must still be considered a game fish for its savage attacks on the lures most commonly thrown by bass fisherman. They are fast, tackle busting acrobatic fighters. While edible, they are usually released due the many pesky little bones in their fillets.

Also locally called speckled perch or specks and considered as the favorite of the perch jerkers or crappie fisherman that pursue them. These quick striking fish fall for a variety of lures. They congregate in large schools and once located, provide the angler with plenty of action and a great fish fry.

Although the above fish offer some sport and even good eating, it is still the Largemouth Bass that promises the biggest challenge of sport.

There are innumerable techniques and types of tackle available to practice the sport of bass fishing. For a beginner, it is advised to gather some more basic tools to get started. Some suggestions point towards acquiring a approxiametly 10-pound test line, suitable for the average sizes and weights of this species. Also, it is suggested to start with artificial bait until the angler has a better understanding of the unique characteristics of the bass fish. The Spinner bait is common artificial bait used by both amateur and seasoned anglers.

The catch and release method was first introduced in the 1950s. It was designed to reduce the rising costs of restocking hatchery-raised fish, and was normally used for fish not meant for consumption. Popular consensus does not consider bass as a food fish, and thus this technique is widely used.

We’ve been receiving a lot of questions asking me about fishing for bass in Texas, and it’s no wonder why the state is so popular for fishing with its over 6000 reservoirs and almost 5000 square miles of inland water.

Before you head off for a Texas fishing adventure, first we need to cover a few things, such as pests you’ll find. Black widow and brown recluse spiders are known to frequent Texas, along with scorpions, centipedes, fire ants, and a plethora of flying, stinging insects. Additionally, copperheads, rattlesnakes and the Texas Coral Snake may all be living close to where you visit, so be prepared by arming yourself with knowledge on what to treat and how to treat it. A first aid kit combined with some special items just for the area you are traveling to is never a bad thing to bring along, especially if you will be taking children along with you.

Now don’t let some friendly cautionary advice turn your head away from Texas, as dangerous and painful pests can and do reside all over the place elsewhere, too. The best thing about Texas fishing is the selection, and here are some great places to start looking:

Caddo Lake used to be a natural lake that received quite a bit of expansion upon the building of a dam on Cypress Creek. Caddo Lake is a great beginner’s area to catch loads of bass all day and year long, but only if size doesn’t matter so much to you. Over 6 pounds per is pushing expectations here, but the scenery is beautiful and the bounty is plentiful. Check the Cyprus trees at Caddo Lake to find some great hiding spots.

Lake Fork is an excellent place to find a record catch. Beautiful, spacious, and plenty of hiding spots, this lake is definitely where its at, but the fish here are wise and require a great deal of trickery to be caught. My advice here is to sneak out at night without motor and catch them when their guard is down.

Lake Sam Rayburn, with its treasure cove full of hiding spots and structure, has long been a winning area in Texas, and doesn’t show any signs of losing in the near future. A vast, scenic area close enough to civilization to mix up a family fishing trip with some city life, this lake has what its got to get great amounts of great-looking and great-tasting bass almost year round, although I suggest during the week when things are slow.


Toledo Bend is just about as good as it gets for cover, even rivaling Lake Sam Rayburn in size and structure. Another beautiful area, this reservoir is partially in Louisiana and is fed by a large number of creeks as well as the Sabine River. The best place in the spring is just on the other side of where the Sabine River empties out into the reservoir, particularly any large muddy areas off to the side of the river, but be careful of the current.

The Rio Grande River empties out into Amistad, which can be a great place for the experienced bass fisher, but beginners need to either steer clear of the area or only go with a seasoned guide. Not only is this fertile topwater area only a potent spot if you know what to look for, but it can also be dangerous with the winds that frequent the area for a good part of the year. Even an experienced boater in a small enough boat can get tipped here!
