Fishing Local Ponds For Bass

I live in the Midwest and I have fished plenty of ponds and largemouth bass are very adaptable gamefish, they can be found in lakes, rivers, and ponds all across the United States. Largemouth bass doesn’t need big water areas to grow to hawg size. Just about any body of water a few years old can produce some nice bass. While cover along the banks isn’t necessary, cover in the water with plenty of forage is a must for bass. Even if there is alot of fishing pressure I have 3 techniques that I use to catch some big bass.

In early spring, when bass are moving from their winter areas to staging areas and eventually to the shallow flats, few presentations consistently produce better than a crawfish imitating lure. The reason these lures are so effective is the bass’s fondness for the freshwater crawfish. Even though bass will eat crawfish through out the year, this predator/prey relationship is strongest in the early spring.

It was fall of 2007, I had just made it back from Iraq. The son and I decided to take a ride to a pond on base and do some bass fishing. I have like to use top water baits like Hula Poppers or Buzz baits this time of year, and I was, with no success other than a few quick hits. However my son was killing the Bluegill and little largemouth bass with his beetle spin.
Well actually he wasn’t using a beetle spin in the traditional sense. We had removed the split tail body and placed a lime green rubber shade body on it. Worked like a charm, as always.

The beetle spin is probably “the go-to” lure in my tackle box. I carry this bait, along with a light rod and reel setup, everywhere I go. The beetle spin is my “fail safe” lure. Whenever I am having one of those days fishing where it is like the Dead Sea everywhere I go I can always count on the beetle spin to land something, maybe not a bass, but something.
